Gridence Demonstrated Real-Time Airspace Situational Awareness at Kuhmo Fly-In

At Kuhmo Fly-In 2026, Gridence demonstrated how real-time airspace situational awareness can be deployed quickly and cost-effectively to support flight safety and operational activities at regional airports and aerodromes.

Gridence deployed a local airspace monitoring system at Kuhmo Airfield and connected it to the Gridence cloud platform. The system created a real-time situational picture of manned aircraft and drones operating in the vicinity of the airfield. Visitors were able to follow the traffic live on displays at the Gridence stand.

The practical demonstration showed how quickly a local airspace monitoring capability can be deployed and integrated into a broader digital airport infrastructure.


Electronic Conspicuity Is the Foundation of Safe Airspace


The number of airspace users is increasing. This growth is being driven particularly by unmanned aviation, but the transformation brought about by electric manned aviation is also becoming increasingly visible and is expected to accelerate in the coming years. Safe shared use of airspace requires aircraft to be electronically detectable and their position data to be shared in real time with all relevant users.

The Gridence solution combines information from multiple sources into a single real-time airspace situational picture. The system utilises data from technologies such as ADS-B, ADS-L, FLARM and Remote ID, together with other sensors, to create a comprehensive and reliable picture of traffic around an airport or aerodrome.

A multi-sensor solution improves flight safety, strengthens operational situational awareness and creates a strong foundation for managing increasing low-altitude airspace traffic and supporting the establishment of U-space airspace.


From Visibility to an Operational Airspace Picture


At the event, Gridence also presented cost-effective electronic conspicuity solutions that enable general aviation aircraft, ultralight aircraft and drones to become part of a shared airspace situational picture.

The digital airspace infrastructure of the airport of the future consists of three key elements: devices that collect and distribute air traffic data, an ADS-B UAT ground station, and software that aggregates and analyses the information. Sensors provide real-time data on manned aircraft and drones, while the ADS-B UAT ground station enables up-to-date traffic information and other flight-supporting information to be transmitted to aircraft in real time.

The Gridence software combines data from different sources into a unified situational picture, analyses it and transforms individual observations into operationally relevant information. Instead of presenting operators with isolated observations of airspace events, the system provides an understanding of what is happening, how different events are connected and what actions they may require. In this way, raw data becomes meaningful airspace intelligence.

The solution supports airport and aerodrome operators, authorities and other airspace users in their daily operations and decision-making. Our goal is to make a shared real-time airspace situational picture a natural part of operations at every airport and aerodrome.

The key is to invest in cost-effective digital airspace infrastructure that does more than display aircraft on a map. It collects, distributes, combines and analyses airspace data. This enables smaller airports and aerodromes to improve flight safety, increase operational efficiency, identify anomalous or harmful activity at an early stage, and prepare for the growth of both manned and unmanned aviation.


Electric Aviation Is Accelerating the Transformation


One of the most notable visitors at Kuhmo Fly-In was the Elektra Trainer electric aircraft, which attended the event as part of Oulu University of Applied Sciences’ North Circuit – From the Alps to the Arctic tour.

The visit provided a concrete demonstration that electric aviation is no longer merely a vision of the future, but a rapidly developing part of European aviation. As the cost of flying decreases and environmental impacts are reduced, both general aviation and commercial drone operations can be expected to grow significantly.

This development further increases the need for electronic conspicuity and a shared real-time airspace situational picture.
